Paul Connor’s practice is rooted in landscape and the lineage of landscape painting. Working across painting and drawing, his work explores how places are perceived, remembered and reinterpreted, drawing on the traditions of plein air observation while bringing them into contemporary dialogue.

He was the founding director of the NSW Parliament Plein Air Painting Prize, an initiative that helped reposition en plein air painting at the forefront of contemporary Australian art. The prize emphasised direct engagement with place and supported a renewed critical and public interest in outdoor painting practices.

Connor’s interest in environment and conservation extends beyond his studio. He has served as a Trustee of The Australian Museum and of the Lizard Island Reef Research Station, reflecting a sustained commitment to ecological research and stewardship.

His undergraduate studies in architecture provided an early framework of spatial thinking and formal discipline. Accepted into the master’s program at Columbia University, New York, he instead completed a Master of Fine Art at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, graduating with first-class honours.

Connor has been a finalist in major Australian awards including the Glover Prize, Mosman Art Prize, Calleen Art Award and the Korean Australian Art Foundation (KAAF) Art Prize, and was the recipient of the Broken Hill Regional Gallery Pro Hart Outback Prize in 2024. His work is held in public and private collections across Australia, Hong Kong and England, and is currently on display in the Australian Embassy in Beijing.

Connor’s practice continues to negotiate between observation and memory, situating the Australian landscape within both historical painting practices and contemporary environmental concerns.
